Heather

Heather's Story

BEFORE

Heather was unhappy working for a company where she had long hours, high stress and an unsupportive environment that was impacting her mental health.

WHAT HAPPENED?

After an appraisal went badly, Heather was at a loss. She suggested she might go see her GP for medication to help with the anxiety she was experiencing at work. The next day she was asked to leave her job. Her confidence was at an all time low – she was on the verge of quitting her career as a chartered accountant.

HOW CABA HELPED

CABA funded some sessions with a career coach and a counsellor to help get Heather’s career back on track and help her develop robust strategies to cope with pressured situations.

AND NOW…

Heather has renewed confidence and passion for her career as a chartered accountant. She regularly uses the techniques she learned in counselling to stop herself from taking on other people’s stress. She’s now in an interesting interim job where she is learning new skills.

HEATHER SAYS

‘It was great that CABA could fund the counselling and the career coaching, I certainly needed both and trying to pay for them myself when I wasn’t earning would have really added to my anxiety.’

Martin

Martin's Story

BEFORE

After Martin fell in love with the Australian lifestyle, he emigrated to Sydney and found a senior finance role which he really enjoyed.

WHAT HAPPENED?

When the global financial crisis hit in 2013, Martin was made redundant. He saw it as an opportunity to pursue his other passions, and completed a degree in languages. But after he graduated, he found he was lacking confidence to go after the career he wanted.

HOW CABA HELPED

Martin got in touch with CABA. His advisor helped him access CABA’s Sydney-based support, including a number of sessions with a well-regarded career coaching company. As well as having his own dedicated coach, Martin was able to attend workshops on CV writing and mindfulness, and had the chance to network with others in a similar position.

AND NOW…

Martin got 3 job offers, including 2 permanent positions. He says that thanks to his career coaching sessions, he feels more resilient and tenacious. He feels fully able to make the most of his skills.

MARTIN SAYS

‘Working with a coach helped me to take stock of my skills and crystallise what I wanted to do, and to gain the confidence to sell my skills.’

Rob

Rob's Story

BEFORE

Rob enjoyed a successful career at his old firm for 8 years. When he felt it was time to move on, he negotiated a strong exit deal and ended his role.

WHAT HAPPENED?

After he left his old firm, Rob was at a loss as to what he really wanted to do with his skills. He needed a space to think through his options and consider his next steps.

HOW CABA HELPED

Rob attended several of CABA’s courses. From there he decided to apply to CABA’s coaching service. With his coach’s support, Rob developed his ideas and business methods, feeling more and more motivated. He soon realised that he wanted to start his own business. His coach shared his experience and expertise in that area and helped Rob make this a reality.

AND NOW…

Rob has been running his own company for 3 years. He and his business partners employ 15 people, giving legal advice and financial and HR consulting.

ROB SAYS

‘CABA aren’t just here for when you’re struggling, but with their coaches and courses, they’re a fantastic resource for moving forward and achieving your career goals.’

Julie

Julie's Story

BEFORE

Julie was doing well balancing family life with the demands of running her own small chartered accountancy firm.

WHAT HAPPENED?

At a social event in a nearby town, Julie was sexually assaulted. She was understandably distressed and frightened by the event, and struggled to know how to deal with the situation both in her professional and personal life.

HOW CABA HELPED

CABA provided counselling which helped Julie talk through her experience and see that her fear was legitimate. She was able to identify coping mechanisms that helped her deal with the traumatic experience.

AND NOW…

Julie has decided to be open with her colleagues and family about what happened to her, and draw on their support. She has come to see which situations are likely to trigger her fear of a similar attack happening again. She now feels much more able to cope with the anxiety around her attack and says that she has been able to move forward confidently.

JULIE SAYS

‘I rang the CABA helpline and said “I need help with this”. It was an incredibly difficult phone call to make, but I was determined to find a way through.’

Abigail

Abigail's Story

BEFORE

Everything was going great. Abigail had a senior chartered accountant role and things were going well with her long-term partner.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Abigail’s partner became seriously ill and she became his carer. She was then diagnosed with breast cancer. Abigail gave up work and claimed ESA. Her partner sadly passed away and she was struggling with grief, a reduced income, and her illness.

HOW CABA HELPED

When Abigail’s benefit payments were reduced, CABA contacted the DWP and were able to reverse the decision. Grief counselling and career coaching helped her regain confidence and the funding of a car made getting back to work easier.

AND NOW

Abigail’s health is much better. She has a part time role that gives her time to take care of herself through yoga and seeing her friends.

ABIGAIL SAYS

‘It’s important not to see it as a hand-out. It’s support to help you piece yourself together and become independent again.’

Hiran

Hiran's Story

BEFORE

Hiran’s son was diagnosed with Cluster Headaches when he was in his late teens – a condition which has prevented him from completing university, finding work or having relationships due to the severity of the pain he experiences.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Hiran’s family lived in Melbourne, but were invited to take part in a medical trial in London. His son responded well to treatment and Hiran realised he needed to stay in London and find work. He didn’t have many contacts in the UK and was worried that his age might make it difficult for him to find a job.

HOW CABA HELPED

CABA arranged for Hiran to work with a career coach. Together they went through the application process, refreshed Hiran’s CV and online presence and identified suitable senior roles to apply for.

AND NOW

Hiran now has 2 interim roles in London. He and his son are able to stay in the UK while his son receives treatment.

HIRAN SAYS

‘I would not hesitate to recommend CABA’s services to others who find themselves needing to change countries or reorganising the way they work.’

Kamilla

Kamilla's Story

BEFORE

Kamilla was about to have her second child. Her husband was working as an accountant and she was due to start unpaid maternity leave.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Kamilla’s husband suddenly became very ill. He was diagnosed with leukemia and had to be off work for 6 months. With their finances already stretched by a building project that had taken longer than expected, the family’s income quickly dried up.

HOW CABA HELPED

As well as helping Kamilla apply for various state benefits, CABA also arranged for her to talk to a counsellor to help her get through this difficult time. And a monthly grant helped the family stay afloat until her husband was well enough to return to work.

AND NOW

While he still has routine check-ups, Kamilla’s husband got better and is now back at work. Their children are now aged 4 and 2, and they’re also expecting their third child.

KAMILLA SAYS

‘CABA’s support meant I could focus on my husband’s health and my unborn baby, instead of trying to think of how we were going to cope financially.’

Elliot

Elliot's Story

BEFORE

Elliot invested in a pub business with his sister. She ran the pub while he took care of the finance side of things and also worked for a big corporate company. He was married and had 2 small daughters.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The 2008 recession hit the pub business hard and revenue plummeted. At the same time, his wife was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease, a terminal illness. Elliot was facing bankruptcy, which would mean losing his job, at the same time as coping with the pressures of caring for 2 small children and his ill wife.

HOW CABA HELPED

Through CABA, Elliot received debt advice and support in his role as a carer. The support helped him to deal with the emotional stress, as well as expert advice on the benefits and support he was entitled to claim. With CABA’s help he accessed the support of a daily carer to help his wife look after the children. CABA’s experts took a hands-on role in negotiations with Elliot’s debtors. Together they set up a repayment plan and he avoided bankruptcy and kept his job.

AND NOW

Sadly Elliot’s wife passed away. Elliot has worked hard to clear his debts and is now coming to the end of his repayment plan. His daughters are starting secondary school, and they’re coping well. CABA helped the family navigate the most difficult of times and move forward with their lives.

ELLIOT SAYS

‘Of course it was traumatic and difficult for that long period, but I felt I had someone who was 100% on my side to help me through the nightmare.’

Edward

Edward's Story

BEFORE

Edward was working in a revenue accounting job that he enjoyed, when he was offered a more challenging position that also gave him the chance to use his skills as a linguist. He accepted and for the first 3 months things went smoothly for him.

WHAT HAPPENED?

After 3 months Edward was told that he hadn’t developed enough and his contract was terminated. He was stunned. He felt this came out of nowhere. He felt completely unsupported and unprepared.

HOW CABA HELPED

Edward contacted CABA and received 3 sessions with a career coach. He was invited to join a course on how to optimise his CV and profile online. Talking things through with someone who understood the industry helped Edward rebuild his confidence and move forward. He was patient and after 4 months he had 2 significant job offers on the table. He worked with his coach to decide which was best for him.

AND NOW

Edward took a job as a financial controller at an Italian food importer where his language skills were seen as a great asset. He soon got promoted to General Manager and has led his team through important system changes to help the company. Overall he finds his work much more challenging and interesting than his previous role.

EDWARD SAYS

‘I had a connection with a friendly face who really understood my industry and wanted to support me. I needed validation for the direction I was going in. Working with CABA really rebuilt my confidence.’

Laura

Laura's Story

BEFORE

Laura is a chartered accountant and spent several years working in a company’s training division. 6 years ago she took voluntary redundancy and started a new career, becoming a coach and trainer in business behaviour and personal effectiveness.

WHAT HAPPENED?

While Laura knew she’d made the right decision for her career, it was at a time of transition in her personal life, as she ended a 20-year relationship and her son left for university. She felt she would benefit from professional development and support.

HOW CABA HELPED

Laura started taking some courses with CABA to progress her professional development and look after her own wellbeing. She found the high standard of the courses inspiring and revitalising. She refreshed her skills and took on new tools to support her business. The courses focusing on happiness and wellbeing in particular made her feel positive and energised. She also had 3 sessions with a career advisor, which helped her review her strengths and continue to develop.

AND NOW

Laura continues to enjoy her career as a trainer. While she always pursued learning through webinars, podcasts and books, she found the real world connection of CABA courses added an additional dimension.

LAURA SAYS

‘I felt very supported at a time in my life when that was extremely useful. At CABA all the quality checks are done for you, so no matter what service you’re accessing, you can rest assured it’s of a high standard.’

Polly

Polly's Story

BEFORE

Polly had spent nearly 10 years working as a chartered accountant. She always enjoyed her work and the team around her. When she was given a new role, everything went well for the first year until her line management changed.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Polly felt that her new manager was determined to criticise her and her work. What followed was 14 months of anxiety, stress and fear. She felt humiliated by the criticism she faced. She became depressed and felt hopeless.

HOW CABA HELPED

After Polly’s family encouraged her to challenge her situation, she turned to CABA for legal advice. They advised her on what actions she could take and how. She also received counselling to deal with being bullied. When she took a new job, Polly thought the worst was behind her. But 5 months in she was told that the team didn’t like her and she wasn’t right for the role. She was devastated. She turned to CABA again who offered her telephone counselling. Her counsellor helped her find new hope by helping her look at her situation more objectively.

AND NOW

Things have improved for Polly. She has a new accountancy post and her current job is going really well. She’s also reviewed her career and realised that she’d like a more creative role and is retraining.

POLLY SAYS

‘You don’t realise when you’re in it that something terrible is happening to you, but if you just reach out to CABA it can be the beginning of seeing things differently.’
